Habits of building Nung people's houses

To suit the living and production conditions, Nung people gather in villages. The Nung's house is not only a place to gather cultural activities of the family, but also a miniature image of ethnic culture.
House structure
The typical traditional house of the Nung is a stilted tile floor. The most noticeable feature in a Nung's house is a 4-storey stilt house, in addition to 2 main roofs, 2 gable roofs are always lower than the main roof. The technical structure of 4 Nung stilt houses is more complicated than that of other 2 stilt houses in some other localities. This is evident in the structure because of its wing, gable roof, rafters and columns in its ribs (usually with a structure of 4,6,7 rows of columns).

The Nung's stilt house opens the door to 2 gables. The main door usually places the stairs up and down, and the side door is where the kitchen or the floor. The number of stairs always has only odd steps: 3,5,7,9 ... not even. The old concept is that even staircases are only used in the world of the dead. The proverb "pú dủ p area" (oddly, even) is to express that concept.

Select the land and the direction of the house (Big Buddha)
In the minds of the Nung people, the house seems to have become a condition for the success or failure of each life. Therefore, making a new house for Nung people has become one of the important events in life. Nung people believe that the place to build houses must be high, airy, the position of the house and the direction of the house should not be obscured by mountains. The direction of housing selected by the locals during this period was mainly in the South. Like some of the current concepts, when choosing the land and direction of the Nung's house, there are some taboos: They abstain from building houses on the old well or dead end, the plots near places of temples, shrines and places of worship. ... in any direction, the Nung's home also ensures favorable conditions for production and living, meeting the needs of life.

Select material (Sewing range)
Unlike some other ethnic groups, the Nung do not have the custom to help each other or choose the date of collecting materials. Often the family prepares materials by themselves, only when they have enough to build a house. People go to the forest to choose pleasant bamboo and woody plants. The timber and bamboo must be straight and uniform. Only in this way do we ensure the scientific meaning, durability of materials and aesthetics. Lanyards are usually made of bamboo, neohouzeaua, rattan, roofing materials are often prepared by the people when they are going to build houses in the free time.

Select age and commencement date
When finished preparing the source of raw materials, the people proceeded to select a year to build a house, select a commencement date. The owner of a small ceremony came to Mr. Cao and Mr. Mo to see if he could build a house that year, starting the time and date; building a house and going to a new house is the best day The teachers usually depend on the age of the host and the first thundering day of that year. Normally people over 40 years old can build a house. After seeing the age and the important days, the homeowners prepare to perform the "foundation" (Kinh called the ground breaking). After making a vow, people who are old to build a house will hold a hoe, a hoe 45 times in four corners from East, South, West, North and in the middle to start the foundation.

The carpentry ceremony (De Van long big)
This is a ritual to pray to the Earth Gods and Ancestors, and Master Lu Ban, in order to protect carpentry work safely. Therefore, the carpentry ceremony was conducted not only with the owner but also with the participation of the workers' guild. In order to conduct the launching ceremony, the host is about to place a salty mound on the altar to burn incense and bow to the ancestors, the master burns incense and asks the permission of his ancestor, Lu Ban. After the ceremony, the eldest worker used a knife to cut a few wooden sticks at the hour he chose to suit the house. Only after the eldest worker put down the knife did the carpentry work begin the most important work of that day, which was to cut the "Big sewing machine" (a pole, a ruler).

How to build a house
Building a house for the Nung people is not difficult because the people have the habit of helping each other when building a house. When building a Nung's house, pay attention to when to put the main column and roof. These events Nung people have to choose a date based on the word of the priest. By the prescribed time, people put them together.

Before building the house, they dug holes to erect the pillars. Now they have a beautiful rock and put it in those holes. The owner of the column must hug the column on the rock. For houses with pillars, they perform a ceremony of printing the blocks first and then erecting them before placing them, people often put down a red piece of paper, considered as a charm to protect the house from evil spirits. After the construction was completed, people began to roof the house, with two secondary roofs first and then two main roofs.

New home entrance ceremony (Kin festival blurred speech)
The new home ceremony is one of the indispensable rituals when completing the house. First of all, people carry out some work such as making incense sticks in places of worship. In addition, you must set a place for cooking and collecting firewood. The altar should be newly built or if used, the old altar must be cleaned, including the altar. The time of placing the altar must be carefully reviewed by the priest. This is a traditional form of belief, suitable to the economic conditions, living conditions and spiritual cultural life of the people, it has profound educational effects.

Other beliefs related to the house
The Nung thinks that the home of the owner must have a place of worship with the purpose of supporting the health of the family, warding off evil spirits, especially to guard the door to prevent bad spirits from entering the house. Therefore, in addition to the ancestor altar and the Apple they also have incense sticks at the door to worship the door guard.

In the home, someone died and the object was worn. If a person dies in the street, he / she is not allowed to bring inside the house but must be left in the alley. They conceive that when they bring the dead to the family, they will encounter bad things and be harmed by evil.

The families in the village have people who give birth, so no one comes to play because they are afraid of bringing bad luck to the house, affecting the health and temperament of the baby. If anyone does not know that someone is staying at the house, they will be invited to drink a cup of wine by the landlord.

Housing reflects the socio-economic development level of each ethnic group, and reflects the trend of their economic development associated with dealing with the natural environment, especially the mode of living.
